Artist in Residence 2019-20

Throughout the 2019/2020 Season, LuganoMusica will welcome cellist Gautier Capuçon as Artist-in-residence. This tradition established since 2015 has brought to the LAC performers of international fame such as pianist Daniil Trifonov, violinist Julia Fischer and flautist Emmanuel Pahud. It didn't take long for Gautier Capuçon to become the spokesman of a style that unites softness and virtuosity, enhanced by the sound – both full-bodied and delicate – of his 1701 Matteo Goffriller cello. Having gained orchestra experience in the Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester and trained with Bernard Haitink, Pierre Boulez and Claudio Abbado, Capuçon now alternates solo engagements with chamber music collaborations alongside artists such as Martha Argerich, Daniel Barenboim and Lisa Batiashvili.

For his first appearance as Artist-in-residence at the LAC, Capuçon will perform as soloist during the Gewandhausorchester's second concert under Andris Nelsons (October 23), playing Schumann's Cello Concerto which he recently recorded with Bernard Haitink.  Gautier Capuçon will also partake in two chamber music concerts: on March 4, he will play the Chopin and Franck's Sonatas, two 19th-century masterpieces, with pianist Jerome Ducros. On June 5 he will appear on stage with his brother Renaud Capuçon and pianist Frank Braley for an all-Beethoven trio programme.
