Listening to Krystian Zimerman playing in concert is a unique experience. The famous Polish pianist, known for the perfection of his magnificent recordings, attains a different dimension in live performances when he seems to abandon the veneer of the "perfect pianist". He then tends to allow himself moments of expressive intensity and increasing tension.
Zimerman has a theatrical conception of music-making. Sound means everything for this musician, maybe because he transports his piano around with him and spends long hours before the concert in a tuning ritual. Sonorous, eccentric, hollowed out in the chord masses or free and very light in the impressive acceleration of trills: his undeniable virtuosity always pairs with the sharpest intelligence.
