The word Giardino (garden) derives from the ancient Germanic gart, meaning to surround. The “harmonic garden”, the name given to the ensemble founded in 1985 by Giovanni Antonini, houses a diverse and valuable musical collection. The artists come from the best European musical institutions and are brought together by a passion for performing 17th and 18th-century music according to historically informed performance practice. Over the years, Il Giardino Armonico has become the most popular and sought-after ensemble specialising in performance on original instruments. The ensemble's vast discography and numerous awards, including a Grammy Award in 2021 for the recording of Farinelli with Cecilia Bartoli, are proof of this quality.

Il Giardino Armonico is joined in this concert by Katia and Marielle Labèque, a prodigious and celebrated piano duo that tackles baroque, classical and contemporary repertoire with equal ease. Since 2000, the sisters have initiated several projects devoted to historical performances on the fortepiano; the latest to date is dedicated to Bach and Mozart works. “The Labèque sisters are fantastic. They are wonderful advocates of music, not just modern music, but music as such. It is fantastic to work with them,” said American composer Philip Glass.
